ELEMENTARY ARTS SPARK!
(rising 1st & 2nd grades)
Theatre
Improv |
Play is an integral part of theatre. Students will explore play through improvisation to help build a love of theatre, have fun, and in the process, build their stage and life confidence. The ultimate goal is to tap into their imagination and help them grow within an ensemble setting.
Storytelling with Puppets |
Come make puppets that you will bring to life with your very own stories. We will create an assortment of puppets over the course and then write scripts for the puppets.
Devised Theatre|
Express yourself and your ideas with theatrics! Create your own character, develop your storytelling strategies, and explore your imagination while working together to produce an original piece of theatre.

Let’s Sing!|
Singing together can be so much fun! In this class we will explore the lighter side of vocal music. We will be singing campfire songs, singing games, silly and fun songs, all while working to become better singers both individually and as a group.

What made Louis Armstrong so great? What about Fats Domino? Learn how New Orleans musicians have combined jazz, blues, R & B and even rock ‘n’ roll to create our local unique sounds! You’ll get to sing and learn a little bit of guitar too!
New Orleans Drums|
New Orleans has a unique drumming tradition. The local sound is a combination of the many cultures that have combined to make New Orleans the wonderful place it is! In this class, students will explore these rhythms passed down through time which combined to create the wonderful beats present in this great city.
Strings! |
In this class we will be exploring new and exciting ways of playing string instruments together. Using games, composition activities, and music technology we will work together to produce a short concert we will perform at the end of the session. This is a great opportunity to try out an instrument you haven’t played before, or enhance the skills you already have on your favorite string instrument! The violin, viola, cello, and bass will all be offered in this class, and students will receive a recording of their final performance.

Mask Making Workshop |
Living in New Orleans, we are familiar with many fantastic types of masks! Artistically, masks are among the most remarkable objects created by traditional civilizations. In this class, we will explore this remarkable art form. What kinds of mask are there? Why do people make masks? How do masks make us feel? How do masks differ between different cultures. We will also construct different styles of masks. Ultimately they will use the learned techniques to construct a paper mache mask.

Campers will explore and build using a variety of materials such as toothpicks & food, cardboard, clay, straws, cardboard, wire, paper, paper mache, craft sticks, rocks, and even ice!

Students will learn about and make a variety of different types of prints. Students will also work on making their own hand produced books illustrated by their prints and poems. Students will create mono types, nature pints, and relief prints with simple tools.

In this class students will have the opportunity to learn about different types of photography while shooting and printing images with professional software like Adobe Lightroom. Students will walk away from the class with beautiful photographs in addition to an understanding of composition and camera basics.
Stop Motion Claymation |
Students will write their own screenplay then create their own characters in order to develop their own claymation movie.
Game Design |
Sorry, Clue, Monopoly, Risk, Candy Land and Pictionary are just some of the country's most popular games! Now it's time to create your own! After playing multiple games, this class will learn and discuss the strategy that makes them great. Then, it's time to apply some of the ideas to design a game of your own.

If a picture can say 1000 words, how many words would a collection of pictures tell? Each student will create a digital slideshow of images to tell a story of their creation.

Do you like to move? Do you like to use your imagination? Do you like to create? Let's explore the world of Dance! In this class, we will work independently and in groups using various choreographic and improvisational elements to explore a wide array of dance styles.

Martial Arts provide the practitioner with physical education, while at the same time they focus on body mechanics that translate into self-defense. Embedded within the disciplines, are valuable lessons on body movement and performance, which can crossover into other arts. Karate is a Japanese martial art, which originated on the island of Okinawa. It developed further on mainland Japan, and was popularly disseminated to the rest of the world in the later half of the 20th century. It specializes in punches, kicks, blocks, and footwork. Karate is not only a physical, but also a mental discipline. The practitioners will learn how to concentrate physically and mentally. We also educate the students in martial arts philosophy, which stresses the importance of respecting others, centering one’s mind, and refraining from violent behavior. What is the Brown Bag Challenge? Each day, every child will be given a bag of supplies and a challenge to create something with their supplies. It could be a toy. It could be a tool. It could be an instrument. It could be an independent project. It could be a team creation. Who knows!
Sound & Senses |
Are you an animal lover? Have you ever wondered how an animal uses their senses? What is the purpose? Why are some senses more important than others? How did animals evolve to enhance communication? How does sound travel? What is the most important sense? Is it the same for all animals? Students will work with live animals : rabbits, lizards and turtles. Using theatre, role playing visual art and investigative techniques we will work to answer all of the these questions.
Recycled, Reused and Renewed |
You know what they say... One man's trash is another man's treasure! Can you create something new and necessary from recycled material? In this class, students will use recycled materials and the Design Thinking strategies to find new a new, lasting and useful life for disposed of materials.
Endangered and Adored |
Are you an animal lover? Are you worried about endangered and threatened species of animals? Would you like to help create solutions? In this class, we will research endangered and threatened species of animals, especially those that live near or in Louisiana. We will explore what we can do to help keep animals from extinction and how to get the word out to others.
Why Does the Wind Blow? |
What is wind? How do artists depict wind? How does wind affect us and make us feel? What do scientists know about what causes wind? Let's dive into the complex world of wind. Through experimentation and artistry, students will explore and strive to explain this dynamic quality of nature and how it is used in and to create visual art.
Invasive Species |
Working collaboratively and using innovative design strategies, students will create their own imaginative destructive creature that could potentially survive in New Orleans. Then, they will have to develop strategies and traps to eliminate each one in order to save their city!

How did Bill Gates create Apple computers? Where did rotary phones go? How did Frank Lloyd Wright create fantastic buildings? Why are potato peelers so much easier to use than they once were? Everything began with an idea. Learn the processes that the masters used. Learn the strategies that people in Silicon Valley use. Become a designer. . .

Learn these skills and more as we explore the works of historic and contemporary Japanese artists and art forms (Hiroshige, Hokusai, Kusama, and more). We will create and design our own Japanese-inspired paintings, block prints, origami and calligraphy.
Tea and Tales |Tea party meets book club at the Tea and Tales class. We will choose a book to read (that suits everyone’s interest and ability) and sip tea while discussing and reading. Book-based projects will be designed and explored as well.
